FAQ's about Birds

Birds | Cats |  Dogs | Fish | Reptiles | Small Animals

SPACE: Much of this depends on the size of the bird. Some birds like a Macaw require much more cage space than a Finch.
An Amazon Parrot may live for about 70 years. So if you intend getting a bird, make sure you are making a bird a friend for life. Many parrots don't adjust as well to change in ownership; getting so depressed that they become extremely ill. Amazon Parrots never recover from the trauma. If you are not absolutely sure about making a serious long-term commitment, then it might be best to consider a bird with a shorter life span. longevity.
Neatness: Many kinds of birds are untidy. No matter what you do, debris will litter the area around a Mynah bird cage. However others birds are able to confine their messes to inside their enclosures.
Noise: Some birds sing soft songs, while others create a daily screeching. If you live in an apartment, you may want to be careful when choosing a bird in the event it disturbs your neighbours.

Try to get a cage big enough for the bird to completely spread its wings.
Avoid getting round cages as they make it difficult for the bird to climb in. Try getting a square or rectangular cage made of a powdercoated rust-resistant metal.
Place the cage in a room where there is some kind of activity as birds like being around that atmosphere. Install two or three perches of varying diameters to prevent foot fatigue.
Parrots appreciate a nest box they can retreat to for sleeping or privacy.
Hang a few interesting toys in the cage to keep your bird occupied when you're not around. Rotate toys every couple of weeks to keep things interesting.
Birds need to bathe at least once every couple of weeks to keep their feathers in good shape. Small parrots such as budgies can use the small plastic bathtubs that can be attached to the inside of the cage.
Larger parrots, use a heavy ceramic dog dish as a bathtub.
Cover the bottom of the cage with old newspaper. Newsprint doesn't hurt birds, even if they shred the paper. Change the paper every day for an easy way to spot a change in droppings.
Covering the cage with an old towel or light blanket helps most birds sleep better.

Seeds are very popular, but an all seed diet is high in fat and deficient in vitamin A, calcium and protein, and will eventually cause serious health problems.
Parrots can eat on people food as long as there isnt any salt and sugar. Feed grains, vegetables and fruits.
The recommended ratio is 50 percent cooked grains such as rice and oatmeal, 20 percent fresh fruits, 20 percent fresh vegetables, and 10 percent nuts and beans.
The following people food are suitable for parrots to eat.
whole-kernel corn, cooked pasta, plain popcorn, cooked oatmeal, barley, wheat bread.
Most birds love apples, pears, plums, oranges and grapes. Remember to remove all seeds from fruits; some pits are toxic to birds.
If your bird has eaten nothing but seed all of his life, you can move him to a better diet as soon as possible, because as soon as he explores a variety of foods could help save his life if he ever gets sick.
Gradually introduce new foods while leaving the bird's old seed diet in the cage for a few hours every day. As it learns to like the new menu, feed less seed. Never abruptly and completely change a bird's diet. A parrot suddenly and completely deprived of familiar foods can starve itself.
Tip for first-time cockatiel and budgie owners: Check your bird's seed dish daily to make sure it's full of seeds, You can separate shells from whole seeds by lightly blowing over the dish. This will make it easier for the birds to find whole seeds.
Dont ever feed your bird avocado or chocolate. Avocados contain a toxic chemical called persin. Chocolate contains theobromine, chemical that animals cannot digest.

This normally happens if the bird has had a sudden change in its routine.ie:Moving house, death in the family etc.Try to keep your bird in a stable environment, also give them lots to do in the way of parrot toys as boredom is also a contributing factor to feather plucking. Neglect also contributes to feather plucking, when we get our baby parrot we give so much attention but as it gets older and we get busier we tend to not show the same attention we gave before. Remember parrots are a lifelong responsibility.

New birds probably just need time as they are a little afriad of their new owner.
Have a settling in period where you allow your bird to watch you and your normal activities to get used to the new environment and atmosphere. After this period has passed, you can try placing your hand inside the cage and say "up" while offering one finger to a small parrot and your entire hand to a large bird. If the bird doesn't respond, gently press the back of your finger or hand against its lower abdomen to encourage it to step forward.
If the bird panics at your approach, best to remove your hand and give it a bit more settling in time. As the bird becomes calmer, start the process again by offering a treat through the bars.
When a bird has been mistreated or never handled, it can take days, weeks, even months of patient, daily interaction to earn its trust. Don't give up.

Most parrots are capable of saying at least one or two words. You can increase the odds that your parrot will talk by choosing a chatty species, such as an African grey or Amazon parrot.
However, there's no guarantee a bird will talk. It depends on the individual.
Most parrots learn phrases they hear their owners say frequently, such as "hello" or "come here.
